Covenant Kids (Birth – 5th Grade)

May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love, and may you be able to feel and understand, as all God’s children should, how long, how wide, how deep, and how high God’s love really is; and to experience this love for yourselves… Ephesians 3:17-18

We provide childcare for infants up to 4-year-olds from 9:45-11:15am every Sunday in our Infant and Toddler Room on the upper level.

Children who are 4 years old and up are invited to learn and grow with us in The Kingdom every Sunday.  Our wish in The Kingdom is for children to experience connection to God and to one another and to grow and deepen their spiritual lives. We do that by offering two spiritual growth models we really believe in: Godly Play and Prayer & Praise. In Godly Play, there is a story called “Ten Best Ways” to live. This is the story of the Ten Commandments that God gave to God’s People. We have formatted this introduction to be the “Ten Best Ways” for parents, so that you, the parent, can share more fully in your child’s spiritual growth experience in the Kingdom.

Godly Play is Jerome Berryman’s interpretation of Montessori religious education, and is an imaginative approach to working with children. It supports, challenges, nourishes and helps guide their spiritual quest. Godly Play assumes that children have some experience of the mystery of the presence of God in their lives, but that they lack the language, the permission and the understanding to express and enjoy that spiritual experience in our secular culture. In Godly Play, we enter into our parables, sacred stories, silence and liturgy in order to discover God ourselves, one another and the world around us. [Excerpt from The Complete Guide to Godly Play, Vol. 2, by Jerome Berryman].

Prayer & Praise is another spiritual growth model we use for learning how to pray and connect and worship God in different and creative ways. It is offered 1x month and uses a variety of tools, including body prayers, breath prayers, centering prayers, singing, dancing, and utilizing art materials for praying and worshipping.

The Ten Best Ways For Parents

  • Godly Play sessions take place every Sunday (except the 1st Sunday of the month, which is when we have Prayer & Praise) from 10:20am (after the Children’s Message in Worship) to 11:10am in The Kingdom (downstairs). The Royal Purple Room hosts our Early Elementary Class (4yr olds – 1st Graders). The Great Green Growing Room hosts our Older Elementary Class (2nd -5th Graders).
  • If your child is in the early elementary class, we encourage you to escort your child to the Kingdom classroom the first couple of times after the Children’s Message in Worship, so they feel comfortable with where their classroom is and they see you entrust them to their Godly Play leaders. Please help your child be on time. They won’t want to miss a minute!
  • The Godly Play circle is built slowly and lovingly, to welcome each child, one at a time. When children arrive, they wait outside the door while the teacher helps them get ready to join the circle.
  • Please say your goodbyes at the Godly Play door, and know that the teachers are ready to make the next hour a safe and welcoming time for every child.
  • Please pick up your child promptly at 11:10am as they are individually blessed and dismissed once you arrive. Keep in mind that young children will not always be able to tell you what they learned, because what they learned was how to learn about the powerful language of Christian people.
  • Also keep in mind that children will not always be able to show you a physical product for their “work” that day, because some of what they’ve learned cannot be put into words even by adults. In Godly Play, we focus on our relationship with God and the depths of relationships in the community of children.
  • Please don’t come into the room during class because we want the Godly Play room to be a special place (a sacred space) for the community of children. Even the teachers keep their profiles low during a Godly Play session!
  • We always welcome volunteers to be storytellers or doorkeepers and join our Kingdom staff.   Email Abby McCubbin at for more information.
